The workout day — supposedly more stressful — produced better overnight recovery metrics. That's because low-intensity movement throughout the day keeps your cardiovascular system supple, your blood flowing, and your parasympathetic nervous system engaged.

The damage from prolonged sitting wasn't fully offset by a morning workout.

What actually helps

The fix isn't adding more intense workouts. It's breaking up sitting time with frequent, low-intensity movement.

Stand up every 30-45 minutes. Even 2 minutes of standing or walking around resets the vascular stiffness that builds up during prolonged sitting. Set a reminder on your watch — it's literally built for this.

Walk after meals. A 10-minute post-meal walk improves glucose regulation and contributes to your daily movement total. It's one of the highest-leverage habits you can adopt.

Don't treat rest days as sit-all-day days. A genuine rest day includes gentle movement: a walk, stretching, light housework, playing with your kids or dog. The goal is active recovery, not zero movement.

Check your standing hours. Apple Watch tracks this for a reason. If you're consistently hitting only 6-8 standing hours on weekdays, your sedentary time is probably high enough to affect your metrics.

Use your evening RHR as a feedback signal. If your resting heart rate at 9 PM is 5+ bpm higher than usual, you were too sedentary that day regardless of how you felt. Let the data guide you toward more movement tomorrow.

Sitting all day isn't neutral — it's actively working against your cardiovascular health and recovery. Your resting heart rate reflects this before you feel it.
